Fun with Hieroglyphics

Duration: Two 45-minute sessions

Description: This lesson will introduce students to one of the earliest forms of writing which comes from Ancient Egypt. Hieroglyphics will come alive to the students as they create their own story in hieroglyphics.

Goals: The students will understand the use of the written language of Ancient Egypt.

Objectives: Write a personal story in the written language of Ancient Egypt.

Materials: pencils, markers, black and white butcher paper, rulers, and the book Ancient Egypt by Susan Purdy and Cass R. Sandak.

Procedure:

  1. Teach students about the use of hieroglyphics in Ancient Egypt. Familiarize students with the use of hieroglyphics, why and how the Egyptians created this language.
  2. Expose students to written examples of hieroglyphics.
  3. Have students write a brief description on what their lives would be like if they lived in Ancient Egypt.
  4. Have students translate their story into hieroglyphics. First in pencil, then going over drawings in markers.
  5. Have volunteers read their story aloud to the class. Display artwork.

Assessment: Observe students while they are translating their stories into hieroglyphics. Discuss with students what their hieroglyphics mean, checking their understanding of the use of hieroglyphics.
